Canada Day

On Friday Garry and I headed out at 5 am south to Crimea to pick up Stacy, it was raining away when we left and for about the first hour and a half of driving. We stopped for gas and some junk food after two hours.

We got to Simferopol by noon, and then headed to a sandy beach nearby with Stacy (she had been to Yalta but hadn't swam yet.) Garry and Stacy went swimming, but I found it a little too cold- they say it felt warmer after you were in!

I took some photos of people enjoying the beach- just like you were there! Except no sand- this beach had sand- many Black Sea beaches have rocks- sometimes flat ones like river rock. You'll notice that small suits are popular with both guys and girls (and older people too.) You learn what is the cultural norms in the country you are in- for example many little girls (less than 8 or 10 years old I think) do not wear tops at the beach, there are some western-style two piece suits- but the bottom is the traditional- there were a few little boys with nothing at all in that puddle by the pier.)

Since we had not had lunch we tried some local beach food - we disagree on whether they were shrimp or crayfish (they had little black or red eggs under them.) Not very filling- more shell and legs to peel off than anything to eat.

Stacy tried the boardwalk and came back with sharma (like a tortilla filled with meat, veggies and sauces, which hit the spot, although Garry had to try the baklava when a boy came past with a tray (didn't even have bees chasing the sweet treats.)

We stayed overnight with friends and went to a local Tatar restaurant for a wonderful anniversary dinner- here we are in an after dinner photo. Saturday we headed home and grabbed some cafeteria-service style food for lunch at the far side of Simperopol, so we were home by 5 pm, in time for Maxim to go to church in Zaporosia.

Next post I'll show you some sights along the road to Crimea.
