Ferro- pro basketball in Zaporosia
Ferro is the name of the pro basketball team in Zaporosia, we went on the weekend to the last home game of the season. While I was gone to NJ Garry took Andrei to a game, they ended up sitting under the noisy fanatics with the chanting and the big drum. Ferro is named for the local steelworker industry, you may know that the the Latin word for iron is similar.
Garry wanted get there early to buy tickets, so he went inside after we parked in front of the gymnasium.
Since it was so nice we went for a walk to get a photo of the ironworker statue. Garry tells me he heard that they are threatening to close down the steel mill in the city, trying to get lower electricity rates for a better profit margin. You can tell how tall the statue is- remember Garry is 6 feet 5 inches, and he looks pretty small there.
We could get inside a half hour before the game started, the players were warming up and our seats were on the floor under one of the baskets (away team first half) there was a ceremony before the game, the 12 players and 9 coaches for Ferro all got gift bags, there are four Americans on the team and you can find them in this photo.
They were ahead for most of the game, but the home team ended up losing in the end. Here are some action photos of the players and the cheerleaders that perform during timeouts. The girls change their outfits every time, the basketball jerseys are new this year, last year they wore old ones from the team for one number. The most elaborate number between the third and fourth quarters, included ribbons like they use for rhythmic gymnastics.
It took a few minutes to get out of the parking lot after the game, some cars on the other side of the lot used the sidewalk to escape the blockage.
