As you may know, Garry often gets stopped at police checkpoints for not having his lights on. Ukraine passed a law a couple years ago, daytime lights have to be on for highway travel... or outside the city anyway... from October 15 to April 15. Unlike in Canada, very few cars have automatic daytime lights. Garry didn't always remember to turn them on, and would have to talk to the police at many checkpoints. One Sunday the students got him out of the ticket by saying that he taught orphans.
Garry has been talking about getting retrofit automatic daytime lights since the law came into effect, and last month he finally found someone to try to do it. Success! He hasn't been stopped since we got them. Of course, in 10 days we won't need them until October, which is why most Ukrainians think it's strange we got them. After all, think of the battery power we'll waste all summer. However, Victor's neighbor installed them, and he thought of this, we can turn them off by pulling a fuse.
It may be the law but like the seat belt law, it is honoured more in the breach. People drive until it is almost black outside before turning on lights. I guess to save the bulbs and alternator? It is insanity but ...
